RCAF Stn Centralia
No.9 SFTS (Service Flying Training School) moved to Centralia from Summerside, PEI, on 6 July 1942. It utilized twin-engined Anson bombers to train graduates from Elementary Flying Training Schools as bomber and transport pilots. The first trainees (Course 61) reported and training at the new station as workmen still laboured to put the final touches to runways , hangers and barracks.
A typical class size was between 40 to 60 new pilots, and a new class began each month. Students were initially given a course lasting 10 weeks, but at Centralia the duration was extended to twelve weeks. The first class began on 2 August 1942 and 49 pilots graduated on 20 November 1942. Throughout the war the school was commanded by G/C R.C. "Moose" Fullerton, famed night fighter ace, and the first Canadian to fly the Hawker Hurricane.
No.9 SFTS disbanded 20 June 1945. During its four years, 2098 multi-engine pilots for the British Commonwealth. They comprised 1963 RCAF, 43 RAAF, and 35 RNZAF personnel.
