R179314 LAC Kenneth Gerald Spooner, GC
No.4 Air Observer School - London, Ontario.
May 14, 1943 - Age 20 Years.

The RCAF's second George Cross was awarded posthumously to Leading Aircraftsman Spooner in May of 1943. A student Navigator with no pilot training, LAC Spooner took over the controls of an Anson aircraft when the pilot suddenly fainted.

His action enabled three comrades to bail out. Soon after the aircraft crashed into Lake Erie. The Award of the George Cross was in tribute to his act of self-sacrifice so that others might be saved.
